Green, low-carbon and environmental protection have become a global megatrend. To meet the demands of environmental protection and sustainable development, production technologies for bio-based fibers keep emerging. Bio-based fibers have been widely applied in apparel, home textiles and technical textiles. These fibers feature eco-friendliness, skin-friendliness, antibacterial property, wearing comfort and biodegradability.
Bio-based fibers refer to fibers made from organisms or their extracts. Different from petroleum-based synthetic fibers such as polyester, polyamide (nylon) and polyacrylonitrile (acrylic), bio-based fibers are sourced from biomass. They are mainly divided into three categories: virgin bio-based fibers, regenerated bio-based fibers and synthetic bio-based fibers.
Virgin bio-based fibers: Animal and plant fibers processed by physical methods for direct use.
Regenerated bio-based fibers: Fibers produced by spinning, where spinning dope is prepared from animal and plant raw materials via physical or chemical processes.
Synthetic bio-based fibers: Fibers manufactured through spinning: high-purity monomers are chemically synthesized from biomass raw materials, then polymerized into high-molecular-weight polymers.
Shirts, skirts and trousers: Bio-based polyester fibers (such as PTT and PLA) can be used to manufacture a variety of garments. Bio-based fibers including lyocell and polylactic acid (PLA) fibers are ideal for close-fitting underwear and socks thanks to their softness, moisture absorption and antibacterial properties.
Bedding products made of bio-based fibers are comfortable with excellent air permeability and moisture absorption, which help improve sleep quality. With good durability and environmental merits, bio-based fibers are preferred materials for home textiles such as curtains and sofa covers.
Bio-based fibers like PTT and PLA boast good elasticity and air permeability, suitable for sportswear to deliver comfortable wear experience and proper athletic support. Bio-based cellulose aerogel fibers have outstanding thermal insulation performance and can be used as thermal insulation layers in sports and outdoor apparel.
Combined with sensors, bio-based fibers can be fabricated into smart fabrics for health monitoring and environmental detection.
Bio-based fibers are biomass-derived fibers, falling into virgin, regenerated and synthetic types. Compared with traditional petroleum-based synthetic fibers, they are eco-friendly, skin-friendly and partly biodegradable. Widely adopted in clothing, home textiles, functional textiles and smart wearable products, bio-based fibers serve the global drive for low-carbon and sustainable development in the textile sector.
