Plain weave fabric is one of the most basic and widely used fabrics in the textile industry, belonging to the classic plain weave structure. It is woven using a one-up, one-down plain weave interlacing pattern, with the warp and weft yarns having essentially the same thickness and density, uniform warp and weft stress, and almost no difference in appearance between the face and back.

Plain weave fabric has a simple overall structure with dense interlacing points. It features a flat texture, durability, abrasion resistance, and excellent breathability, with extremely high cost-effectiveness. It is a common basic fabric for apparel, home textiles, and industrial applications.

Based on the thickness of the yarn used, fabric weight, and texture differences, plain weave fabric is mainly divided into three categories: coarse plain weave, medium plain weave, and fine plain weave, each with different characteristics and applications.

Coarse Plain Weave

Commonly known as coarse cloth, it is woven from coarse-count cotton yarn. The fabric body is thick and stiff, with a relatively rough texture, and occasionally contains a small amount of cotton neps and impurities on the surface. This fabric is sturdy, durable, and highly resistant to tearing; its drawback is that the hand feel is not delicate enough. It is mostly used for garment interlining, labor protection workwear, cleaning cloths, and can also be made into simple home textile materials, offering outstanding practicality.

Medium Plain Weave

Also called shirting, it is the most common plain weave category on the market, woven from medium-count cotton yarn. The fabric has moderate thickness, a flat and smooth surface, balanced softness and stiffness, combined abrasion resistance and skin-friendliness, stable shrinkage rate, and extremely strong adaptability. After dyeing, printing, and bleaching, it is often made into shirts, bed sheets, duvet covers, and other daily apparel and home textile products.

Fine Plain Weave

Woven from fine-count cotton yarn, it has a lightweight and delicate texture, a clean and flat surface, a soft and smooth hand feel, and excellent light transmission and breathability. The fabric is refined and delicate, with a crisp and comfortable texture. It is mostly used for lightweight summer clothing, next-to-skin underwear, embroidery fabrics, and premium home textile accessories, offering better appearance and wearing experience.

Summary

Overall, the three types of plain weave fabric rely on their different fabric characteristics to cover multiple scenarios including everyday wear, home living, and industrial applications. With stable quality and affordable prices, they have become indispensable basic categories in textile fabrics.
